The interest which the newspapers hold for the modern mind is due to certain obvious advantages. The newspaper is a swift vehicle for the conveyance of news from all the four directions of the world. Hence, some interpret the meaning of the word NEWS, which is more or a less play on the word, but quite revealing as North, East, West and South, i.e., the newspaper is an instrument of informing us about all the parts of the globe. It keeps us in touch with the events of the world in general and those of the country and provinces in particular. The eductive value of the periodical is unmistakable. Articles on all subjects-scientific, educational, cultural, literary, commercial, etc., appear in their pages. These articles add to our knowledge and broaden out outlook. To quote a writer, 'The careful reader of a few good newspapers can learn more in a year than most scholars do in great libraries.' Their services as 'school masters or educators of the common people' cannot be put to question.

The newspapers not only publish news but express views also. They are the mouthpiece of the people. They mould and mend public opinion. Through them the inarticulate dumb masses ventilate their ideas and sentiments, express their grievances and by revealing their emotions of admiration, and obligation, pray for the necessary actions from their rulers. The government would be less responsible, the judges less honest and the police less efficient of there be no journals and newspapers to criticize their conduct. The press is, therefore, great mentor which stands against the misuse of power and the miscarriage of justice. It brings all the questions of the day before the bar of public opinion to be approved or condemned by it.

The newspapers have a great commercial significance. They publish regular reports of world's main markets in gold and silver, stocks and shares. In their capacity as advertising agents, they bring together the buyer and the seller and forge a link between demand and supply. Although the general public does not recognize the importance of this function, those who want partners, these who seek husbands and those who seek wives all these very much appreciate in their own ways the help of the newspapers in that direction. The propaganda value of the press is really very great. A popular newspaper can accomplish any feat. It can create war today and establish peace-tomorrow: it can make a leader of a common man or a ordinary person of a great leader: it can dethrone kings and change governments overnight. Rightly did Napoleon feel that 'four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets?'

But like every other institution of human making the system of newspaper is also attended by peculiar evils and shortcomings of its own. Journalism cannot acquire status of literature. One is practical and short lived, the other is ideal and over lasting. Newspapers are, thus, things of the moment; they have no solidity of permanence of interest. They are read today and thrown away tomorrow in the waste paper basket, whereas a genuine world of literature is read and re-read without any diminishing return in the dividend of pleasure. With certain people newspaper reading develops into a morbid craze which must be discouraged in the interest of true literature. It is one thing to go through a newspaper and the news of the day; but it is quite another to raise it to the status of the Gita or the Kuran and pore over it for hours and hours.

In our country, different newspapers are used by different political parties for the purposes of propaganda. Such papers create a spirit of revenge, bitterness and misunderstanding among the people. Sometimes rich men take newspapers in their hands and use them as the means of their personal profit. In India from Delhi to Calcutta, we have a Dalmia or Birla chain of papers. Such party papers monopolized by capitalists do more harm than actual revolutions and civil wars. They retail lies, suppress truth, inflame passions and misguide the innocent people. More than often in their bid for cheap popularity, they forget their high office and ponder to the lower instincts of their readers, by inserting in their columns what is sensational domestic scandals divorce cases, colored pictures and imaginary love affairs things which corrupt the young and degrade the moral tone of society. Sometimes, in a country where there is no freedom of press, the newspapers become more tools of propaganda in the hands of government.

A newspaper is a healthy morning diet. If newspaper reading is a habit then it is really difficult to start a day without it. It keeps us in constant touch with the day to day developments, events and changes in the world at a very little cost. As such it has large circulation and is the most powerful means of media.

newspaper play an important role in a democracy. It acts as a mirror that reflects the views and opinions of the public and the government. It helps in framing one's own views about the existing leaders. Their policies and activities helps the voter to judge and carefully cast their vote during the elections. The editorial section gives the people the right chance to express their comments on various current issues. Because of the powerful advantage that the newspapers enjoy, they have been rightfully called the fourth estate.

People do not read newspapers just for political events. There are informative columns on everyday entertainments like television, radio, theater, movies, exhibits and cable network presentations. There are exclusive pages of information for sport lovers, economists and businessmen. The eligible candidates eagerly go through the appointments section with a hope of finding a suitable job opportunity. There are a number of classified advertisements for matrimonial alliances, jobs, property dealings, kennels and livestock etc.

By newspapers we also know that they promote the field of advertising, both goods and services. We also get to know when, where and how the various competitive exams are held and admissions to different institutions are done. Advertisements of sale and festival discount catches the eyes of those who plan a low budget.

As we read the newspaper page by page we realize that not all news is good news. There is sadness too. There are columns on those have died and there are criminal reports which knock at our brain telling us to be alert all the while. Many leading newspapers have a weekly grievance section meant for those who have failed in getting justice. By reading them we come to know of the probable problems one can face while dealing with a particular organization.

Newspapers keep us aware of the world around us. A newspaper is a true reflection of all the political, social, economic and cultural spheres of our society. It is necessary to inculcate the habit of newspaper reading if one wishes to be in perfect pace with the changing times.

News papers are a mirror to the happenings outside our sight in the world. As we can not cover whole world with sight, these news papers give an insight of the latest happenings in the world.

There is no wonder if news papers are being referred as the ears of a nation. If there is committed news papers are published in a country, that country will progress rapidly.

By news papers we know about the latest technological improvements, weather, stock prices, world news and local happenings. So if they are abandoned, then it is very difficult to know about the current affairs of the country as well as the world.

In the same way if newspapers are not intended to encourage good news, they may create a great loss to a nation by publishing depressive news which are against the public interest.
